Ranieri Tonissi S.p.A. is developing a methanol dual-fuel marine engine based on an MAN marine Diesel engine. This innovative technology enables the primary use of a diesel and methanol blend as fuel, significantly reducing consumption and emissions associated with traditional diesel combustion.
The engine currently selected is a MAN High Speed 1066kW model with a displacement of 24 liters, an engine model already widely utilized for propulsion in the mega yacht and commercial vessel markets. To date, development has yielded promising results, demonstrating a reduction in diesel consumption of approximately 70%. This substantial decrease directly translates to a significant reduction in harmful emissions, including NOx, CO, CO2, and particulate matter.
Our ultimate goal is to develop a conversion kit compatible with all MAN High Speed marine engines which satisfy the class homologation notations of IACS members and IMO TIER III regulation in terms of emission reduction. This kit will be adaptable for traditional and diesel electric propulsions and genset applications, accommodating both fixed and variable speed requirements.
