Turning Waste Heat into Smart Energy

Modern marine engines are continuously evolving to become more compact, more responsive, and significantly more efficient. While these advancements deliver clear operational benefits, they also lead to an increased generation of thermal energy. Traditionally, much of this heat is simply released into the surrounding environment or dissipated into the sea. At RRS, we see this not as a by-product, but as an opportunity. Our latest Green Ocean engine concept enables the intelligent use of this otherwise wasted heat. By making thermal energy accessible in a simple and practical way, it can be repurposed onboard to enhance overall vessel efficiency and comfort. This recovered energy can be used to heat water, support onboard climate systems, or maintain optimal conditions in sensitive interior spaces. It operates independently of the engine’s core performance, ensuring that efficiency gains come without compromise. Here is an example of a constant speed engine, running at 60Hz:At 100% load, the 16V4000M35S IMO Tier III mtu engine has 2.560kW 1.800rpm and additionally can provide over 800kW of thermal energy at a temperature level of 70°C, with a flow rate of 40 m³/h.
