Marina Ibiza has launched Bio-Box, an innovative and eco-friendly system designed by La Alternativa Eco to clean water in the event of hydrocarbon spills in marine environments. The system uses natural microorganisms (enzymes and bacteria) that break down and digest hydrocarbons, transforming them into CO2 and clean water without generating waste or harming the environment.

Bio-Box works through a hose that distributes the bacteria into the water via an air pump that introduces oxygen, which is necessary to activate the bacteria. These bacteria, stored in a special container on land, are released into the water when needed, where they begin to form colonies upon contact with the hydrocarbons, feeding on them and naturally eliminating them.

This system also offers an effective solution that surpasses traditional technologies such as skimmers or absorbents. It has been approved by Marina Mercante, validated by studies from the University of Vigo and CSIC, and has proven to reduce pollution by more than 90% in the first application, reaching 100% with subsequent applications.

Marina Ibiza was the first marina to implement this measure, pioneering the use of this system.
