The Future Monaco Yacht Show designed around superyacht clients

Press release
Date of release: February 24, 2021

The Informa Group, owner of the Monaco Yacht Show, took advantage of the postponement of the 2020 Show to work closely with the yachting industry on redesigning the event. The rebuild is designed to rise to the commercial and marketing challenges facing the market, by promoting the superyacht lifestyle to a new set of wealthy clients.

A Steering Committee has been created, made up of decision-makers from the yachting industry. It will play an advisory role, supporting the MYS development strategy as it unfurls over coming years - and providing formal recognition of Informa’s commitment to working in partnership with the industry. Informa also plans to provide financial support, matching the annual amounts invested by the industry in its marketing action plan to showcase the superyacht lifestyle.

The keenly awaited Monaco Yacht Show will be driven more powerfully than ever by the superyacht clientele; it will offer a bespoke experience of unparalleled prestige.

Clearer visitor profiles for tailor-made experiences
There will be 3 categories of visitor, each with its own badge. The “Discover” badge will be reserved for yacht clients; their advisors and consultants will wear an “Advise” badge; trade visitors, meanwhile, will be recognised thanks to a “Connect” badge.

Superyacht and tender exhibition in the Dockside Area
One of the advantages of the new badge system will be to enhance the flow of visitors on the quaysides; it will be easier for private visitors to board the superyachts and luxury tenders. On Wednesday 22 September, the Dockside Area will be open to “Discover” and “Advise” badges only, so that these categories of visitor can meet with shipyards, yacht brokers, designers or tender manufacturers in a more intimate and personalised environment. From Thursday onwards, the Dockside Area will be open to all participants.

Premium services for superyacht clients
The MYS official VIP visit programme, the Sapphire Experience, features a programme of activities in the show and in Monaco for superyacht owners, charterers and future clients.

VIPs will be plunged into the world of superyachting from the moment they arrive at the Show. Two new first-class VIP entrances will be located near the Upper Deck Lounge (exhibition space for the show’s luxury partners) and close to the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Starting this year, visitors will discover new sections dedicated to innovative projects and trends in sailing, design and exploration, and the programme is set to grow over coming years, expanding the range of activities that reflect life on board a superyacht. The MYS will also rename its various exhibition areas, identifying each distinct theme to make it easier for visitors to find their way around.

Making sure the right visitor meets the right exhibitor
A future buyer will be interested in meeting with designers and builders, whereas the buyer’s consultant or captain may well prefer to discuss with equipment manufacturers and luxury companies.

Making the right match will be simpler now thanks to a new way of registering for the Show: the profile of each visitor is identified in advance, generating the appropriate badge. The MYS will also offer digital solutions to foster interactions between visitors and exhibitors whilst at the Show – and throughout the year.

By placing the final superyacht client at its very heart, the revamped version of the MYS aims to win over new audiences from other high-end spheres beyond yachting, thus building on the marketing strategy deployed over recent years.

Informa’s main priority is obviously to safeguard the health of participants at the Show and thus provide a safe and serene experience. The 2021 MYS will therefore implement all necessary health measures, guided by its AllSecure programme and health regulations issued by Monaco’s government.

30th MYS is postponed to September 2021

International Super Yacht Show Calendar Update 2020/2021

30th Anniversary of Monaco Yacht Show now confirmed for September 2021, with Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on track for late October 2020

London: Over recent weeks, Informa Markets has been in constant discussions with stakeholders and partners within the international Super Yacht Industry to better understand the challenges facing yacht owners, shipyards, brokers and other key participants in the face of the disruption due to COVID-19.

This has included working closely with all partners involved with the Monaco Yacht Show, and particularly the Principality of Monaco, to determine if a low-density, not-for-profit, support event in Monaco this year would have been both practical and beneficial to the market.

With much of the Super Yacht fleet currently located in the US and Caribbean and the normal calendar of activity severely disrupted, it has been agreed that it is in the industry’s best interests to postpone the delivery of a top quality, prestige experience 30th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show next year, in September 2021, rather than September 2020.

In 2020, all parties have agreed to focus their efforts and energy on supporting the International Yachting Community through Informa Markets’ US brands, including the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the largest international yachting events in the world. This is scheduled to take place in late October, with more than 900 boats anticipated to be on show, including 100 Super Yachts.

Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets, said:

Like many other industries, the international super yachting community has experienced significant disruption in 2020. As we move to the other side of COVID-19, we are remaining agile in how we are supporting our partners and customers, flexing our events calendar, adapting products and providing digital alternatives where beneficial to best meet the needs of international communities through this difficult period.

He added:

To this end, we are focusing our efforts in the latter part of the year on delivering a strong platform to showcase the industry at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October, with the Monaco Yacht Show now set to return in style in September 2021, when it will celebrate its 30th Anniversary.

MYS 2020: A Superyacht Industry Support Show

The Principality of Monaco and Informa announce a secure, not-for-profit event in 2020

The Principality of Monaco and Informa today confirmed they are working together to deliver an intimate, not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in Port Hercule in September 2020, with full details to be announced in the coming weeks.
The proposed event will employ the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness and be dedicated to supporting the speedy recovery of the industry post COVID-19, providing an invaluable platform for designers, brokers, shipyards and other key players within the yachting industry to connect with their customers and share ideas in a safe environment.

Return & Recovery post the COVID-19 Pandemic
Like most industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on the international yachting community, with many businesses temporarily closed and staff furloughed, and the usual annual cycle of industry activity severely disrupted.
As countries and locations around the world gradually relax lockdown restrictions and ease control measures, it is imperative that the superyacht community is supported in every way possible to help the industry return and recover safely and quickly.

The 30th Monaco Yacht Show in September 2020
With this in mind, The Monaco Yacht Show has been working closely with the Principality of Monaco to determine how best to support the industry in 2020.
This year’s Monaco Yacht Show is scheduled from 23 to 26 September. With control measures steadily being relaxed in Monaco, around Europe and internationally, on current course and speed, this should allow for a carefully staged event to still take place this year.
Therefore, it is our intention to retain these dates for the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show and work with suppliers and local authorities over the coming weeks to confirm full details of the event.
In the spirit of the history and position of the event within the superyacht industry, the 30th Monaco Yacht Show will be run on a not-for-profit basis, recognizing the challenges facing everyone post the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, providing direct support to all attendees and exhibitors from across the market.

Highest standards of hygiene and safety
The proposed 2020 Monaco Yacht Show will be organised in accordance with Informa’s AllSecure health and safety standard. As the world’s leading events’ organiser, Informa has developed a detailed set of enhanced measures to provide the highest levels of hygiene and safety at its events, providing everyone with reassurance and confidence they are participating in a safe and controlled environment.
Whilst the intimate nature of the 2020 event will prioritize the safety of participants, both Informa and the Monaco Principality are committed to ensuring the quality of the event and show experience is maintained for everyone.

Charlie McCurdy, Chief Executive, Informa Markets (organiser of the Monaco Yacht Show) said,
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on all industries, not least the international yachting community. As we move to the other side of the pandemic, all parts of the industry need to work collaboratively to ensure a speedy return and recovery. We are playing our part by hosting a not-for-profit Monaco Yacht Show in 2020, providing an opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, meet with customers and start to rebuild positive momentum.”

Jean Castellini, Minister of Finance and Economy for Monaco, said,
“In the aftermath of COVID-19, it is the responsibility of the Monaco Government to do everything we can to help businesses and industries recover quickly. In this spirit, we are working with Informa to finalise details of the 2020 Monaco Yacht Show, which will prioritize the health and safety of all participants, whilst providing direct support to the international yachting community, ensuring it can connect with customers and accelerate the recovery of what is an increasingly important industry for the region.”

MYS 2020: the preparations continue

The 30th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is still on course to take place from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 September 2020 at Port Hercule in Monaco.

The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic is being felt all over the world and at all levels; protecting the planet's population has become the absolute priority.

This unprecedented situation is affecting national economies, with notable repercussions on the yachting industry. Now, more than ever, the MYS must shoulder its responsibility to support the industry and all of the business sectors that make it possible to organise the MYS.

The organisers are fully aware of the strategic importance of the MYS to the companies that participate each year – for growing their business, sales and marketing.

The MYS provides the various sectors of the luxury yachting industry with an opportunity to showcase their products, services and innovations. Shipyards and yachting brokers, for example, can invite clients keen to discover the world of luxury yachting onto their superyachts.

The MYS offers the perfect setting for establishing direct relations based on trust. Future buyers can visit several yachts all in one day, compare them, meet the designers, and discuss with brokers and shipyards. Such a totally immersive experience is as essential as it can be decisive when considering the purchase or construction of a superyacht.

Every year, Monaco stages the biggest display of superyachts in the world, featuring over one hundred boats boasting an average length of 49m.
Like everyone else, the MYS is keeping a close eye on how the pandemic is evolving, with the hope of a healthier and more stable situation around the globe in coming months.

In order to protect the health of participants at the MYS, we will implement directives issued by the government of Monaco and the World Health Organisation (WHO) that reflect how the pandemic has evolved by September 2020.

The 2020 Monaco Yacht Show will probably be one of the first occasions in the year for bringing together players in the luxury yachting industry, for meeting private clients to discuss current and future market trends and, in short, for sharing the authentic superyachting experience that only a visit to a yacht show can offer.

MYS 2019: quality was there

From 25 to 28 September 2019, the Monaco Yacht Show featured the most impressive fleet of superyachts in its history and attracted a record-breaking number of exhibitors: 600 companies came to energize the yachting market, drawing an encouragingly vast and committed clientele to the show.

2 weeks after the 29th edition of the MYS, feedback from the exhibitors is pragmatic and positive: although the market could be stronger, positive signs are to be noted, including the higher number of private visitors present at Monaco’s Port Hercule this year. They included guests of MYS, invited to visit the various superyachts up for sale or charter. The MYS private concierge service invited over 200 VIP visitors (211 to be precise, compared to 150 in 2018), linking them up with the show’s exhibitors and triggering over 50 yacht visits. The majority of these potential clients came from the United States, Russia, England, China and India. Exhibitors noted a definite trend in visitor profile: a broader range of countries, a wider age bracket, and serious intentions to buy or charter.

The MYS confirmed its status as a major annual event in the world of luxury yachting by unveiling some of the latest superyacht projects, technologies and joint ventures during the four days. The event’s importance was further established by the outstanding quality of the yachts exhibited in the water and the fantastic products and services presented at the various stands. The show acts as a true catalyst for trends in the yachting world of the future, proving to future owners and yachting professionals that the MYS is an absolute must – as confirmed by the albeit slight increase in attendance this year (31,565 visitors compared to 30,400 in 2018).

The most impressive fleet of superyachts ever exhibited at Monaco Yacht Show
The most keenly awaited superyacht show of the year showcased 125 superyachts with an estimated total worth of around €4 billion*. Out of all 29 editions of the yacht show, this was without doubt the most impressive fleet of vessels ever to be presented. The superyacht exhibition included 44 new models and 14 megayachts over 70 metres in length - including 2 over 100m! Although the average length remained stable at 49.5m, the average price for a motoryacht exhibited at the show reached €37.8 million this year. All in all, the 2019 MYS boasted yachts that were bigger and more amazing than ever, as well as a tendency towards “greener” yachts and enhanced performance in terms of technology, speed and design.

600 top-notch exhibitors
600 participating companies occupied a large portion of Port Hercule in Monaco, organised into different themed areas. Yacht builders, brokers and designers set up their stands on the quaysides, close to their yachts. Tender and water toy manufacturers showcased no fewer than 55 pieces of equipment, over half of which were being presented for the very first time. Their stands were mainly situated on the port’s Quai Antoine Ier, where the yacht show’s Car Deck displayed 30 collector or custom-built cars and motorbikes. The show’s many nautical equipment manufacturers and country pavilions were set up in tents on the port’s Darse Sud and Quai Albert Ier. The Parvis Piscine tent was dedicated to luxury products and services, drawing many a visitor throughout this year’s show. Its fully revamped Upper Deck Lounge, reserved for the show’s partners from the luxury industry, spanned over 2 floors.

Prize-winning superyachts
On the eve of the MYS, 4 prizes were awarded at the 6th Monaco Yacht Show Superyacht Awards ceremony. The list of winners comprised three vessels. Attila (64m, Sanlorenzo) received the MYS/RINA Award for its design, which complies with the environmental standards established by RINA, the Italian company in charge of classifying superyachts. TIS, a brand new 111-metre yacht by German shipyard Lürssen, received the MYS Interior Design Award. Excellence (80m, Abeking & Rasmussen) won two prizes: the MYS Exterior Design Award, and the ceremony’s most prestigious award, the MYS Finest New Superyacht Award.

Monaco Yacht Summit
Immediately before the ceremony, the MYS hosted the 4th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit, during which a variety of yachting-related subjects were discussed by some 40 participants interested in purchasing or chartering a yacht in the near future.

The 2019 MYS carried a note of optimism, supported by its exhibitors' commitment to showcasing their finest products and services and by an increasingly varied final-client profile. The date has been set for next year’s event to confirm this positive trend on the occasion of the Monaco Yacht Show’s 30th anniversary.

Monaco Yacht Show 2019

A bespoke-made show for the new generation of superyacht customers.

Today it attracts over 125 superyachts with an average length closer to 50 metres, of which around 42 are new launches making their worldwide debut. The average value of the yachts on display is now a staggering €27 million. This is a far cry from the very first edition of MYS in 1991, when there were just 32 yachts moored in Port Hercules averaging 31 metres in length.

This year’s fleet will feature larger superyachts compared with 2018. The largest luxury vessel will be 107 metres in length. 21 units will exceed 60 metres with an average size of 75m!

Full list of superyachts

It is hard to overestimate the importance and prestige of MYS as a barometer that measures the state of the large yacht industry. When business is booming, there is a tremendous vibe among the yacht brokers and builders walking the dock. But in a sector still adapting to the aspirations of younger buyers and charterers, continued prosperity is not guaranteed and there is no room for complacency. As a proactive industry player, MYS is embracing change by adopting development strategies that deliberately target the emerging superyacht clientele.

“We work to offer the most prestigious superyachting event to the new generation of customers,” confirms Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of MYS. “Our responsibility is to offer our visitors an entertaining and instructive plunge into the world of superyachting, while serving the interest of the industry. In other words, to encourage encounters between final clients and the best players in the market.”

Already filled to capacity each year and occupying much of Port Hercules, there is little or no opportunity for physical growth in Monaco. Instead, the show organisers are focusing on delivering the best platform for business and the most efficient solutions for exhibitors to liaise with clients. One area of improvement, for example, has been optimising the layout into thematic zones to provide more fluid circulation around the quays and tents, and allow visitors to concentrate on their own sectors of interest.

The temptation for any show aimed at end-users is to spread the net as wide as possible and be all things to all people, but MYS is taking the opposite tack by prioritising a specific visitor profile. Positive feedback from exhibitors and partners following MYS 2018 suggests this strategy is already having an impact. The slight drop in overall attendance (2% in 2018 down on 2017) reflects the drive towards lower densities around the port, which results in a more rewarding experience for prospective clients. Indeed, brokers and builders spoke of a higher number of visitors seriously intending to buy or charter.

“We want to attract people who are new to yachting as well as retain our existing client base, but at the end of the day we target HNWIs,” says one yachting executive and MYS exhibitor. “When boat shows are billed as a fun family day out, the cachet value is diluted. I think that whenever a show targets very affluent people, it should offer an experience in keeping with their lifestyles.”

VIP visit program: the Sapphire Experience
MYS is in constant contact with yacht builders, brokers and industry suppliers throughout the year in order to gather feedback and anticipate their needs and those of their customers. The Sapphire Experience, a program aimed at premium clients to enhance their show experience and help them take their first steps in the often-bewildering world of luxury yachting, was set up in 2016. The bespoke program includes a Concierge Service that coordinates private visits aboard superyachts on display, as well as a calendar of festivities during the four-day event. On the eve of show, for example, Sapphire Experience guests join a select list of industry influencers and luxury partners invited to attend the opening gala party, which includes the prestigious MYS Superyacht Awards Ceremony.

Monaco Yacht Summit
Since being introduced to the MYS agenda in 2016, the annual Monaco Yacht Summit immediately prior to the show has become a key event for clients and their advisors looking to enter or better understand the world of yachting. Attended by qualified representatives, family offices and private investors, the Summit includes a series of informative panel discussions with acknowledged experts from across the superyacht industry.

Car Deck – exhibition of classic and customised vehicles
Luxury cars go hand in hand with luxury yachting and the Car Deck exhibition of prestige and one-off automobiles, some of which are available for test drives by prospective clients, has been a big hit with VIP visitors regardless of age for the last four years. It is set alongside the Tenders & Toys area to offer a complete superyacht lifestyle environment in a single chic location.

Tenders & Toys exhibition
By providing access to secluded bays, transits between the mother ship and dry land, or simply an exhilarating high-speed ride, tenders give a younger clientele their first taste of the superyacht experience. Moreover, the stable of water toys – from inflatables to electric surfboards and mini submarines – is always high on the list of priorities for sports-minded charter clients.

New Upper Deck Lounge on two floors
The Upper Deck Lounge will offer top-notch amenities on two floors to welcome the yachting customers and enhance their visit experience of the MYS. The show’s reception and catering area will welcome all visitors in a luxurious environment furnished by the MYS top-of-the-range partners: the ground floor is dedicated to luxury exhibitors, a bar with an outdoor terrace, while the first floor will host the show restaurant and a VIP lounge with a panoramic view over Port Hercules.

New opening hours from 11am to 7.30pm
The MYS changes its opening hours and will welcome attendees, later this year, from 11am to 7.30pm (Saturday 28th September: 11am – 7pm). The goal is to offer a timetable that corresponds better to the visiting times preferred by private clients. The new schedule will also ease the relentless intensity of the show and create a more pleasant experience for visitors and exhibitors alike, while leaving more time earlier in the morning for B2B meetings, press conferences and media yacht visits.

Less about footfall and more about providing a quality service to the growing number of international visitors intending to purchase or charter a yacht, these initiatives will help ensure that MYS maintains its global status as the superyacht show par excellence. Today more than ever before, MYS is about promoting the superyacht lifestyle to a high-end clientele through tailor-made experiences.
