The BLUE MARINAS BALEARES: ZERO-EMISSION DESALINATION FOR CIRCULAR WATER project aims to assess the technical feasibility of installing zero-emission desalination systems in marinas across the Balearic Islands, intended to supply non-potable water for boat washing. The main goal is to replace the use of potable water with a sustainable source and close the water cycle, while also addressing the treatment of the resulting brine waste. This initiative seeks to reduce pressure on local water resources, especially during peak tourist season, and promote more responsible water management within the nautical sector. The study will evaluate alternatives, identify risks and opportunities, and encourage the adoption of renewable energy sources. The solution could be scaled across marinas in the archipelago, with direct impact on several Sustainable Development Goals (6, 7, 13, among others), fostering more sustainable sectors and positioning the Balearic Islands as an international benchmark in environmental innovation.
