Undertaking a yacht charter offers a luxurious and memorable experience at sea. But with the growing issue of sustainability in the yachting industry and younger clients wanting to make more eco-conscious choices, yacht charter can also be an opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment and local communities.
To contribute to conservation efforts whilst creating lasting memories, here are seven ways to make your yacht charter experience more meaningful.
Consider an eco-friendly yacht for your next charter
Whether it’s solar panels or hybrid-electric technology, there are plenty of yachts in the charter fleet that prioritise sustainability.
Propulsion is the smartest way to make a yacht more ecologically-advanced, but there are smaller things you can consider too: like energy-efficient appliances and advanced waste management systems.
Eco-conscious yachts are paving the way for a more sustainable yachting industry, allowing charter guests to minimise their environmental footprint without compromising on comfort, luxury and best-in-class service.
Say no to plastic on board
Opting for biodegradable and eco-friendly toiletries, cleaning products and other amenities on board can make a huge difference to the amount of waste that is produced on each charter.
Guests and crew can make simple changes such as avoiding single-use plastic items by bringing reusable water bottles and shopping bags. Charter agents such as Edmiston offer all this plus marine-friendly sunscreen on board and certain yachts are completely plastic-free, opting for filtered mineral water, metal straws and other more eco switches.
Burgess also does everything it can to facilitate meaningful charters through environmentally friendly onboard amenities. “We also support our crew on our managed yachts by offering a podcast and other materials advising on eco-friendly products, ranging from cleaning to sunscreen,” said Nicci Perides, head of PR and communications at Burgess.
Partner with conservation organisations
Many charter agents now collaborate with reputable conservation organisations to help protect marine environments.
Edmiston, for example, is supporting the Conservation Collective – a global network of local foundations that promote conversation initiatives to protect the environment – and should charter guests wish to gain access to these projects whilst on holiday, they can discuss this with their charter broker.
Burgess also hosts to a beach clean-up event that invites the entire industry to get involved in the fight against ocean pollution.
Many other organisations offer exclusive experiences for yacht charters, such as guided tours, research expeditions and participation in conservation projects. Supporting these can make a significant difference in preserving marine habitats and biodiversity.
Engage in authentic experiences
If you’re looking for fun and unique experiences on your charter holiday, taking part in authentic activities that promote environmental awareness and conservation is a meaningful alternative.
Consider whale-watching tours that adhere to responsible guidelines and prioritise the wellbeing of marine mammals.
Alternatively, participating in beach clean-ups or volunteering with local organisations is a great way to connect with local communities and contribute directly to the preservation of coastal areas and marine life.
Eat sustainably
With some of the world’s best chefs on board many charter yachts, it is the perfect opportunity to eat organic and locally grown ingredients to reduce your carbon footprint whilst enjoying a farm-to-table experience on the water.
Yachting is also a great opportunity to enjoy freshly caught seafood that is harvested sustainably and supports local fishing communities.
Limit energy consumption
Conserving energy on board by turning off lights, electronics and appliances when not in use is a simple way to do your bit for the environment.
Optimising air conditioning and heating settings to minimise energy consumption not only reduces your ecological impact but also prolongs the yacht's fuel reserves, allowing for longer exploration periods.
Spread awareness
Sharing your meaningful yacht charter experience with others is a fun and sociable way to spread awareness of important environmental issues.
Through social media or conversations, you can inspire friends and followers to consider sustainable tourism and responsible yachting practices.
By raising awareness, you contribute to a collective effort in protecting our oceans and promoting responsible travel.
